An Oscillating Positive Expiratory Pressure Therapy System or OPEP device is designed to aid in the loosening and removal of mucus build-up in the lungs. You may need OPEP therapy treatments if you have a lung disease such as COPD where your lungs need help keeping up with the amount of mucus produced each day. OPEP therapy is done by inhaling and exhaling through the Aerobika device several times, then ‘huff coughing’ to remove the loosened mucus.
When you exhale through the device, you will feel very quick pulses of resistance against your exhaled breath. These pulses of resistance hold your airways open and help shake the excess mucus loose, pushing it out of the smaller airways of your lungs. Once the mucus has moved out of the smaller airways, it can then be coughed out.
The Aerobika inhaler is most effective when used inside of Salt Therapy Breathing Centre’s salt rooms. Oscillations create short bursts of increased expiratory resistance to thin, dislodge and move mucus to the upper airways where it can be coughed out. When using the Aerobika* in the salt room, mucus gets broken down fast and speeds up the release of mucus. Using Aerobika* with the salt rooms will take results to a higher level!
Benefits of Using an Oscillating Positive Expiratory Pressure Therapy System:
- May help prevent lung infections
- Easy to learn for independent use
- Inexpensive and portable device
- Little interruption to daily living
- At least as effective as manual chest physiotherapy
